Ásdís Sigmundsdóttir: The Palace of Pleasure and Profit. The introduction of The Palace of Pleasure into the English Literary System in the 16th Century William Painter’s two volume novella collection
The Palace of Pleasure, which was published in 1566 and 1567, has not been awarded its rightful place in English literary history. The work introduces a new genre, the novella, into the English literary system and was used in various ways by other authors in the following years. In this article the work is introduced, its structure and characteristics, and the methods the author uses to create a space for it in its new literary environment. The work and its translational methods are put in context with the attitudes towards translation current at the time.
