Jón Karl Helgason: Cultural Saints of Europe. Comparative Study of France Prešeren and Hans Christian Andersen
Inspired by Itamar Even-Zohar’s distinction of culture as being culture-as-goods and culture-as-tools, this article discusses the social role of European cultural saints with reference to two nineteenth-century writers: Slovenia’s France Prešeren and Denmark’s Hans Christian Andersen. On one hand, there is a focus on the way in which later generations have regarded and treated various remains of these writers’ lives as relics. On the other hand, the way these relics can be and have been a source of social rituals is traced.
