Heiti doktorsverkefnis: The Fairy Tale in Old Norse Literature
The aim of the PhD-project is to investigate the occurrence of fairy tale material in Old Norse literature, especially within the group of the legendary sagas (fornaldarsögur Norðurlanda). The investigation will be based on individual saga texts and episodes to demonstrate that they are partly built upon folktale material, and that certain folk- and fairy tales, as recorded in later centuries, were in circulation in Iceland in medieval times. From the perspective of folklore and folktale studies, the chosen texts will be treated as an expressive culture rooted in medieval Icelandic society. The research is bound to increase our knowledge of medieval culture as well as the nature of saga literature, and its oral features.
