Í erindinu er rætt hvaða hlutverki Grænland hefur gegnt í hugmyndum Bandaríkjanna um þjóðaröryggi, með tilliti til nýrra og gamalla hugmynda um að Bandaríkin „kaupi“ landið. Því er velt upp hvaða merkingu yfirstandandi orðræða hefur og hverjar afleiðingar hennar gætu orðið - ýtir hún grænlenskum stjórnvöldum í átt til sjálfstæðis eða getur hún á einhvern hátt styrkt konungsveldið Danmörku? Umræðan er greind á grundvelli raunhyggju og síðlendustefnu, sem draga fram ólíkar hugmyndir um völd og valdatengsl.

Í erindi sínu fjallar Sumarliði stuttlega um stöðu Grænlands innan danska ríkisins en ræðir einkum um hvers konar orðræður voru ráðandi varðandi Grænland á Íslandi fram á áttunda áratug 20. aldar. Spurt verður um helstu einkenni orðræðunnar, á hverju viðhorfin til Grænlands byggðust, í hvaða samhengi þau voru og dregin fram helstu hugtök í því samhengi. Lagt verður út af því að Grænland hafi verið einn helsti „spegil“ Íslands á 20. öld og rætt um hvort og hvernig „spegilmyndirnar“ breyttust og hvers vegna.

Current political visions of collaboration between the Greenlandic and Icelandic governments are aligned in many domains, and the visions are primarily filled with optimism and emphasis on opportunities. But some “imperial debris” still appears in subtle and intangible aspects such as language. In this talk Gremaud illuminates these issues through an analysis of political statements regarding visions for the future, as well as reflections on the past.

Gremaud examines the use of rhetorical tools in framing the relationship between Iceland and Greenland, particularly in Icelandic sources from the early 21st century. She sheds light on the metaphors employed to shape this relationship, the connotations they carry, and the roles they assign. Special attention is given to the 2020 report by the Icelandic Foreign Ministry on proposals for enhanced collaboration with Greenland, where she has identified five different discourses that assign meaning to the Icelandic-Greenlandic relation.
